Four USPTO Patent Families
Protecting Multiple Novel VTOL Aerodynamic Designs
NewSemi-FITU redesigned VTOL aerodynamics via first-principles physics, yielding four U.S. patents that raise flight efficiency
Our Approach
Returning to First-Principles Aerodynamics
Flight has always come down to four things: aerodynamics, propulsion, materials, control. We master the one that matters most — aerodynamics — because it's what decides what an aircraft can become, and where it can go.
VTOL aircraft requires a dual focus on vertical takeoff and landing as well as horizontal flight, its aerodynamic design becomes far more critical and challenging.
Current mainstream VTOL designs still have their own limitations and bottlenecks, meaning they are not yet ideal for many application needs. NewSemi-FITU's research starts with these unmet needs, and goes back to first principles.
We apply first-principles thinking to scrutinize the limits of current designs, the ultimate capabilities and criteria of varies aerodynamic devices, and the true essence of different application needs.
To address these functional gaps, we propose four distinct technical solutions, ranging from easily implementable add-on designs, to highly innovative and entirely new configurations. These are designated under four project codes: AX1, AX2, AX3, and AX4.
Driven by rapid time-to-market, we focus entirely on aerodynamic configurations, bypassing unproven propulsion, materials, and control technologies. Depending on the specific application, the benefits of these solutions include significantly increasing flight efficiency (by up to 70%), reducing transportation costs, extending mission endurance, minimizing operational footprint (by up to 50%), and boosting flight speed.
The Current State of VTOL — four categories, with their pros and cons
| Category | Strength | Constraint | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Rotor | Efficient in hover, matured by decades of use | All lift comes from the rotor disk — none from a wing | Low forward-flight efficiency, relatively high operation cost |
| Multi Rotor | Simple structure, agile and precise takeoff/landing | Multiple small rotors raise total disk loading and induced power | Low payload-to-weight efficiency, high energy consumption |
| Lift+Cruise | Fixedwing offloads lift in cruise, high flight efficiency, extending range | Wing must be sized for both cruise lift and VTOL footprint | Largewingspan and footprint, lower payload for its size |
| Tilt-Rotor/Wing | Tilting rotors/wings reach higher forward speed than rotor-only designs | Rotor geometry for hover conflicts with rotor geometry for cruise | Complicated tilting mechanism; higher cost, lower reliability |

FAQs
What is NewSemi-FITU's track record in aviation?
While we are a new face in the aviation industry, we are by no means newcomers to fluid mechanics R&D. Our team members possess solid academic foundations and deep industry experience. Over decades, we have honed a unique capability that integrates theory, practice, innovative R&D, and IP management across sectors such as electronics cooling, rotating machinery, and transportation.
Is NewSemi-FITU technology purely academic, or is it commercially and practically feasible?
As industry veterans, we deeply understand that research is meaningful only when it can be realized. While pursuing innovation, we place feasibility as our top priority. Our R&D outcomes are highly implementable, as they can fundamentally be manufactured using existing, proven technologies.
How can I collaborate with NewSemi-FITU?
NewSemi-FITU is positioned as an R&D and innovation engine, dedicated to providing innovative solutions for complex industrial challenges.
